About Pilates
Pilates was developed from the rehabilitation techniques of Joseph Pilates. Originally called Contrology, Pilates is an exercise system that focuses on the core while strengthening the entire body. In Pilates all movements originate from the core. It is essentially the engine powering any movement, whether it is an ab exercise or the movement of the arm or leg. The goal of Pilates is to create balance in the body.
As with any other exercise program, it is important that you check with your doctor before beginning a Pilates practice to ensure that Pilates is a safe choice for you. In general Pilates is safe for most clients. In fact many doctors recommend it to increase or maintain bone density, increase flexibility and build strength.
In some cases, regular Pilates practice improves or even alleviates back, neck and shoulder pain. In many others clients notice that their chronic pain occurs with less frequency and for a shorter duration.
Pilates emphasizes controlled breathing, correct spinal and pelvic alignment, and complete concentration on smooth, flowing movement. The client becomes aware of how their body should feel and how to control its movement. Form is the focus, not the number of repetitions one can do. The power of the breath helps the client to execute movements with power and efficiency.
Heather’s Pilates is an equipment-based practice using the Reformer, the Combo Chair and various props. Pilates can be practiced on the floor and/or various pieces of equipment. In both mat and equipment based Pilates your own body is used for resistance. Equipment based Pilates also incorporates the use of springs and pulley’s to create additional resistance and in some cases to assist in stability. Various props are also used to assist or challenge the client.
